Born in East Aurora, New York on January 20, 1847, Herbert Bowen began the study of law with Benjamin F. Graves in Battle Creek at the age of sixteen. He settled in Detroit and practiced law with Judge Samuel T. Douglass. Bowen was a member of the Detroit Library Commission from 1885-1897 and 1905-1910.
